Functional Dry Needling
Precise. Evidence-Based. Effective.
Dr. Ryan Silbernick – FDN I Certified Practitioner - Evidence in Motion (EIM)
Functional Dry Needling (FDN) is an advanced therapeutic technique used by licensed chiropractors and other practitioners to treat myofascial pain and movement impairments. Using thin, sterile filament needles, FDN targets trigger points—hyperirritable spots within taut bands of skeletal muscle that contribute to pain, stiffness, and dysfunction.
This intervention is grounded in Western neuromuscular physiology and is distinct from acupuncture. It focuses on restoring normal muscle function, reducing pain, and improving neuromuscular performance as part of a comprehensive chiropractic care plan.
How Functional Dry Needling Works
During treatment, the chiropractor inserts a fine needle directly into the dysfunctional muscle tissue. The goal is to elicit a local twitch response—an involuntary spinal reflex that releases the contracted muscle fibers.
This process:
Decreases excessive muscle tension
Improves local blood flow and oxygenation
Reduces inflammatory mediators
Normalizes neuromuscular electrical activity
Facilitates faster tissue healing and improved motor control
Treatment is highly specific, guided by clinical examination of posture, spinal alignment, movement patterns, and palpation findings. Sessions are typically short (15–30 minutes) and seamlessly integrated with chiropractic adjustments, manual therapy, corrective exercises, and patient education for optimal outcomes.
Conditions Treated with Functional Dry Needling
Functional Dry Needling is an effective adjunctive intervention for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:
Neck and low back pain (acute and chronic)
Cervicogenic and tension-type headaches
Shoulder impingement, rotator cuff pathology, and adhesive capsulitis
Lateral and medial epicondylitis (tennis elbow/golfer’s elbow)
Carpal tunnel syndrome and wrist tendinopathies
Hip and knee pain, including IT band syndrome and patellofemoral pain
Plantar fasciitis and ankle sprain rehabilitation
Sports-related muscle strains and overuse injuries
Myofascial pain syndrome and fibromyalgia-related muscular pain
Post-surgical stiffness and scar tissue restrictions
Key Benefits
Rapid reduction in localized and referred pain
Improved joint range of motion and muscle flexibility
Enhanced muscle activation and strength
Accelerated recovery from injury
Decreased reliance on pain medication
Improved tolerance to chiropractic adjustments and rehabilitative exercises
Many patients report noticeable improvements in pain and mobility after just a few sessions when combined with a tailored chiropractic treatment program.
What to Expect
Comprehensive Evaluation – A detailed assessment, including spinal and postural analysis, is used to determine if dry needling is appropriate for your condition.
Treatment – You may feel a brief prick or deep ache as the needle elicits the twitch response. Most patients tolerate the procedure well.
Post-Treatment – Mild soreness similar to post-exercise muscle fatigue may occur and typically resolves within 24–48 hours. Specific aftercare instructions will be provided.
All treatments are performed by Dr. Ryan, who has completed advanced training and certification in dry needling techniques.
Is Functional Dry Needling Right for You?
If you continue to experience muscle tightness, persistent pain, or limited progress with traditional chiropractic care, Functional Dry Needling may be an appropriate next step. It is particularly beneficial for patients with stubborn trigger points or neuromuscular dysfunction that has not responded fully to other interventions.
